BYP has created a one of a kind, “soup to nuts” competition that is designed to connect Boise’s young professional talent with experienced entrepreneurs to encourage idea development and create company startups.

Bring Your Experience.  Work With Other Professionals.  Build A Company.

MISSION:

  • Expand the knowledge base of young professionals located in the Boise City area in the area of company start-up and development.
  • Create 1-2 small start-up companies in Idaho per year.
  • Showcase Boise’s talented pool of young professionals.
  • Create higher paying jobs with the creation of more jobs.
  • Connect the dots-between the already existing technology associations, institutions of higher education, sponsoring companies and business individuals in the technology space.
  • Make Idaho a real technology standout among other states.
  • Mimic real business-nobody does anything for free and incentives must be created.

CONCEPT:

The competition will be divided into two phases:  Phase I will entail finding and fleshing out an idea.  The goal is to find one within certain given parameters and time constraints.  Individuals will likely come into the group without an idea or with a potential idea that hasn’t been vetted at all.  The team participants will work together to find a high quality, marketable idea they can move forward together on.  The teams will present their idea to a panel of judges, the top two teams will enter Phase II.

Phase II will entail actually developing a prototype.  At this point, the teams will be formed into companies.  The 1st place team will be funded with $15,000 and the 2nd place team with $10,000.  The companies will then have 3 months to build and get it to beta (i.e. a functional prototype). The key here is to create a real ecosystem. In other words, lets define all the moving parts and fill it with local talent, as best we can.   The companies will have the guidance of all mentors and any other resources available to them, such as existing technology associations, sponsoring companies and business individuals in the community.  Each team member will become an equity shareholder in the company.  As in all business ventures, incentives are part of the structure.

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

  8. Very informative post here. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me. I’ll certainly be back.
